JAPAMALA

The Japamala contains 108 beads — a number of cosmic significance across Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, 108 represents the 108 earthly desires that lead to suffering, the 108 names of the divine, and the 108 sacred sites of the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit. Monpa lamas in Tawang use japamala beads during Nyungne fasting rituals, counting mantras through the night until the mind merges with silence.
